How it is calculated
- g/yd = GSM × width in metres × 0.9144 (one yard is 0.9144 m).
- oz/yd² = GSM ÷ 33.906.
- Yards per kg = 1000 ÷ g/yd.
- Kilograms to order = g/yd × yards per piece × pieces ÷ 1000.
Questions
How do I convert GSM to grams per yard?
Multiply GSM by the fabric width in metres, then by 0.9144. A 160 GSM fabric at 60 inches (1.524 m) weighs about 223 g per yard.
Why does grams per yard need the width?
GSM is weight per square metre, so it is the same at any width. Grams per yard is the weight of one running yard of the roll, so a wider roll weighs more per yard.
How do I convert GSM to oz?
Divide GSM by 33.906 to get ounces per square yard. 170 GSM is about 5.0 oz/yd².
How many kilograms of fabric do I need?
Find the g/yd at your width, multiply by the yards each piece uses and by the number of pieces, then divide by 1000. Add your usual cutting loss on top.
